Icon 1 Who
Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur is produced by Licorera Ancho Reyes. It was co-founded by Iván Saldaña, a molecular plant biologist who also created Montelobos Mezcal. The brand is inspired by a 1927 family "menjurje" (homemade tincture) recipe from the Barrio del Artista in Puebla.

Icon 3 What
Made from sun-dried ancho chiles, Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur tastes like "dark, cozy heat." It is rich, smoky, and complex. It smells like dried fruits (raisins and prunes), roasted nuts, and a hint of smoky campfire, and it has a thick, velvety texture. You’ll taste bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, and cinnamon, followed by a slow-building, smoldering warmth. The finish is long, with a warm tingle that feels more like a baking spice than a sharp pepper sting.

Why
What truly sets Ancho Reyes apart is its commitment to a painstaking, 100-year-old traditional process known as a menjurje (homemade elixir). One part of that is the “rested” soil. The chiles are grown exclusively in the volcanic soil of Puebla, Mexico. To maintain the unique flavor profile, farmers allow the soil to rest for three years after every harvest, ensuring the nutrient density remains high for the next crop.
