Icon 3 What
Becherovka is widely described as "Christmas in a glass" due to its warm, spicy profile dominated by cinnamon and cloves. Unlike many dark herbal liqueurs, it is a clear, golden spirit that is lighter and more focused on baking spices than medicinal or syrupy flavors. ou will immediately notice a powerful scent of cinnamon, clove, and gingerbread. There are also bright, refreshing notes of pine needles and menthol. The entry is sweet-forward, featuring honeyed notes and a "tingle" of warming spices like ginger, cardamom, and anise. This is quickly followed by a complex, savory herbal layer that includes hints of chamomile, fennel, and lemon balm. It has a long, warming finish with a gentle, bitter-orange edge. It is less syrupy than Jägermeister and lacks the intense, dark-licorice weight of many other European bitters.

Why
What makes Becherovka truly stand out is its combination of "spa water" chemistry and a level of secrecy that rivals Coca-Cola. Karlovy Vary is world-famous for its 12 natural thermal springs. For over 200 years, locals have jokingly called Becherovka the "Thirteenth Spring" because of its supposed medicinal and digestive powers. It is deeply ingrained in Czech culture as a health tonic.

The ritual: Every Wednesday, the Master Distiller and one other designated person (the only two people who know the full formula) enter a private room called the "Drogery" to weigh and hand-mix the herbs. Even within the distillery, the herbs are often referred to by code numbers or letters on production sheets to prevent staff from piecing the recipe together.
