Who Bonal Gentiane-Quina is currently produced by Maison Dolin & Cie, a historic family-owned distillery in France. It was created in 1865 by Hyppolite Bonal (also known as Brother Raphael), a former monk and pharmacist at the Grande Chartreuse monastery. |

What Bonal Gentiane-Quina tastes like a cross between a rich sweet vermouth and a rugged alpine amaro. It’s known for being "earthy and winey" rather than syrupy. Because it is made from mistelle (fortified grape juice), the first thing you’ll taste is deep, dark fruit. Think raisins, dried figs, and prunes. As the fruitiness fades, a sturdy bitterness takes over. This comes from gentian root (which is earthy) and cinchona bark (quinine), which gives it a dry, woody snap. Underneath the bitterness, there are warm notes of cinnamon, licorice, and orange peel, with a distinct hint of dark chocolate or roasted coffee on the finish. |

Why For reasons spirits nerds still debate, Bonal has a magical affinity for Rye whiskey. The woodiness of the cinchona bark and the spice of the rye create a perfect flavor harmony that you can’t get with other modifiers. |
