Who Castle & Key Distillery makes the Small Batch Wheated Bourbon. The distillery operates out of the legendary Old Taylor Distillery grounds, which were originally built in 1887 by Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. before being abandoned and eventually resurrected as Castle & Key Distillery in 2014. |

What Castle & Key Small Batch Wheated Bourbon tastes like warm bakery pastries, sweet buttercream, honey, and light orchard fruit. Because it substitutes spicy rye for wheat, it possesses a soft, mellow profile that favors dessert-like sweetness over heavy grain heat. It greets you with a highly sweet and confectionery aroma. You will pick up pastry dough, vanilla cupcakes, and buttercream, accented by light floral notes like jasmine, alongside baked apricot and honeycomb. It has a creamy, medium-bodied mouthfeel. The initial sip reveals flavors of vanilla ice cream, cane sugar, and dried peaches. Mid-sip, the unusually high malted barley content injects a pleasant toasted nuttiness, reminiscent of almond pastry, light cocoa, and a hint of sassafras. It wraps up smoothly at 100 proof. It leaves a lingering trail of bruleed sugar, sweet oak, and baking spices like nutmeg and cinnamon without any harsh or aggressive alcohol burn. |
