Icon 3 What
Coruba Dark Jamaican Rum is widely regarded as the gold standard for a "Planter’s style" mixing rum. It is defined by a heavy molasses-forward profile with a moderate amount of Jamaican "funk" (hogo). Dominated by rich molasses, burnt sugar, and dark chocolate, accompanied by signature Jamaican notes of ripe banana and baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. It has a thick, oily mouthfeel. Initial flavors are sweet and deep—think brown sugar, caramel, and toffee—which quickly give way to savory, "funky" notes and a touch of charred oak. The finish is typically medium to long and warming, often ending on a drier note with lingering hints of clove, black pepper, and sometimes a slight medicinal or bitter coffee quality.
Icon 4 Why
The Tiki "Backbone": It is the primary dark mixer for high-end tiki bars like Tiki-Ti in Los Angeles and was famously used by Trader Vic to stretch rare, aged rums in early Mai Tai recipes. While Jamaican in origin, Coruba is remarkably the #1 selling rum in New Zealand by volume, where it has been a cultural staple for over 50 years.
