Who Granada-Vallet (also known as Amargo de Granada) is produced by Royal Vallet. The lineage of Vallet liqueurs began with Monsieur Henri Vallet, a French émigré who arrived in Mexico in the mid-19th century. He established himself as Mexico City’s preeminent distiller by the 1880s, creating formulas that are still honored today. |

What Granada-Vallet is a "Mexican Campari" with a dark, moody twist. While it looks like a bright fruit liqueur, it tastes like a sophisticated bitter pomegranate amaro. You get an immediate hit of sour pomegranate and cranberry. It’s not a "candy" sweetness; it’s the sharp, tannic dry snap of real fruit juice. Because of its Mexican heritage, it has a beautiful layer of cinnamon and clove. This makes it feel "warmer" and more autumnal than Italian red bitters. The finish is where the "Vallet" DNA shines. It has a long, woody bitterness from gentian root and cinchona bark (quinine). It’s a dry, lingering bitter that balances the fruit perfectly. |

Why While Granada-Vallet itself is a modern addition to the Vallet portfolio (released in 2014), its historical significance lies in its use of Oaxacan cochineal to achieve its deep red color. This is a direct historical callback to the original 19th-century European amaro recipes. Before the invention of synthetic dyes like Red 40, legendary bitters like Campari were colored using crushed cochineal insects—a tradition that originated in Mexico and was exported to Europe. |
