What Smith & Cross is famous for its funk—a wild, savory, and tropical intensity that bartenders call hogo. Because it is bottled at Navy Strength (57% ABV), the flavors are concentrated and punchy. The primary taste is overripe, almost fermented tropical fruit. Think of blackened bananas, grilled pineapple, and jackfruit. Because it’s a pot-still rum, you get deep earthy notes like clove, tobacco, and dark chocolate. At 114 proof, there is a significant burn, but it’s a flavorful warmth rather than just stinging alcohol. It tastes like caramelized sugar and toasted oak. I leaves a long, dry, and slightly salty aftertaste with hints of molasses and leather. |

Why It is the poster child for Hogo—a term derived from the French haut goût (high taste). This refers to the wild, funky flavors of overripe bananas and earthy musk. While most modern rums were becoming light and vodka-like in the 20th century, Smith & Cross was created to be the exact opposite: aggressive, savory, and loud. |
